Beijing Churches Guide

The church culture has a history of more than 1,000 years in Beijing China, all of the churches standing today were built in the beginning of the 19th, mostly are historic buildings with splendid architecture, boasting of significant historic values and art values.

Beijing mainly has two kinds of churches: Christian Church and Catholic Church, Visitors are not charged entry into any of Beijing's churches however they are not open as tourist destinations. The buildings are only accessible at mass times and if you visits during mass please exercise the utmost respect.

Southern Cathedral

Southern Cathedral of Beijing

Located in Xuanwu District

Constructed in 1904, The Southern Cathedral - 'Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin ', It is the seat of Beijing's dioceses and Patriotic Catholic Association. Latin masses are held six days a week and the 10am Sunday mass, delivered in English and French, attracts a huge diversity of Beijing Catholics from many different countries.

Eastern Cathedral

Eastern Cathedral of Beijing

Located in Dongcheng District

Also called the St.Joseph's Church, it is the most conspicuous cathedral in Beijing which located at Wangfujing Street. The current church was erected by the French in 1905, Inside the church, many precious religious paintings drawn by Giuseppe Castiglione are preserved. After several restorations, it has become a cultural site with unique features in the Wangfujing Area.

Northern Cathedral

Northern Cathedral of Beijing

Located in Xicheng District

Built in a Neo-Gothic style in 1887 under the direction of a French priest, the Northern Catholic Church located in Xishiku street. This church stands enclosed by wonderfully serene grounds in a very old area of Beijing. As you approach the gates of the church down XishiKu you will notice remnants of a large, almost defensive, wall standing either side of the gateway.

Western Church

Western Church of Beijing

Located in Xicheng District

The Western Church, located on the southern side of Xizhimen Nei Dajie, was a Catholic Church first established in 1723 and restored in 1912. Because of a pharmacy factory beside the place of worship, it nearly cannot be seen from the street. But delicate Collins pillars and Gothic peaked arches inside the church make it grand, elegant and solemn.
