The Chairman Mao Memorial Hall located in the south of Tianmen Square is a great square building with a total area of 57000 square meters. This site had previously stood the southern gate to the Forbidden City (Gate of China) during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Chairman Mao, the founder of the People's Republic of China, passed away on September 9, 1976. In honor of his accomplishment, a Memorial Hall was constructed in November 1976 and was completed in May the next year.
