Shangri-La is administered by Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yunnan Province. Shangri-La is the "Eden in dream". Since it first appeared in British novelist James Hilton's Lost Horizon in the 1939, it has been associated with the mystique of a place which could not possibly exist here on Earth.
 

Situation
Located at point where Tibet, Sichuan and Yunnan all meet In the past, the Shangri-La was called Zhongdian or "Jiantang" in Tibetan. Shangri-La means the "sun and moon in heart", an ideal home only found in heaven. There the lofty and continuous snowy mountains, endless grasslands, steep and grand gorges, azure lakes and the bucolic villages always leave a deep impression on visitors.

Weather & Temperature
Because of the plateau climate, the weather of Shangri-La is always varied and unsettled. Even in August, you can find a snow flake dropping from the sky. So no matter when to go, you should be prepared with some warm clothes. The best time to visit is March to August. During this period, the weather is favorable and the wild flowers are in bloom here and there. September or October is also a favorable month. This is fall harvest time and the entire plateau becomes a golden world.

By Air - Shangri-la Airport is Covering an area of 225 hectares, it is one of the biggest airports in the northwest of Yunnan Province. Shangri-La Airport offers flights to Kunming, Chengdu, Lhasa, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Modernizd Shangri-la Airport is a 24-hour airport inside the Yunnan Province with its geology, geomorphology, climatic conditions all being suitable. It is the air corridor flying to Kunming, Tibet and Southern Asia countries.

By Bus - Highways are main means of transportation for tourists to get to the Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. Diqing connects Yunnan, Sichuan and Tibet, network of communication lines is formed with Yunnan-Tibet highway, Sichuan-Tibet highway and Kangding-Tibet being main roads. In a word, it is convenient for tourists to go to tourist attractions in Shangri-la by highway, but some scenic spots such as Bitahai Lake, tourists have to get there on horseback.
